Modern design hotel & spa, Forsthofgut in Leogang Austria

Timbered Modernist

A modern waldhaus inspiration where the forest, mountains, lakeside and just plain stunning vistas come to play through fabulous modern designer interiors that frame nature pure

Intro

The Forsthofgut Hotel & Spa is set to a dramatic canvas of lush pine forests, the fabulous alpine Leogang Mountains and a carpet of wildlife - a scene of bristling nature that simply wraps the luxury wellness retreat into the landscape; the nature hotel on the ski slopes of Asitz.

From humble beginnings in 1617 as a rural forestry outpost, the hotel building has morphed over the centuries and continues to adapt and evolve. Forsthofgut has a strong bond to nature, the meadows, forests and the mountains and this is reflected in both the architecture and design narrative of the hotel and the wellness zones. Forsthofgut is an Alpine chameleon borne of the mountains and has a chilled design flair at the same time. Rural styling permeates the hotel with gestures of design minimalism nudging up to country house references and beautiful textiles that usher that feel of Alpine heart.  Wool, leather, stone and loden abound, but so too is polished concrete, plaster walls, angular statement steel installations, plated glass and architectural timbers that arch towards the mountain peaks. Bold timber and steel architecture borrows from the traditional wooden face of heritage and culture, in a close design relationship that fosters past Alpine traditions whilst using their roots to anchor modern mountain luxury. In applying a simple mantra of a place to feel good in, Forsthofgut spans the heritage of traditional Alpine styling with edgy contrasts, pushing the boundaries of what a hotel is and should feel like. Working alongside several studio partnerships in planning, architecture and design, the ambience truly is a cosmopolitan country.

Boutique Hotel Forsthofgut & Spa is a mountain retreat that has an Austrian soul dealt with a modernist hand and feels like it has always been there at the foot of the “Rockies” of Leogang.

Rooms

In the way that Forsthofgut is the place to celebrate the great outdoors and its encircling doorstep nature of meadows, mountains and forests, you’ll find the rooms and suites to offer a cocooning retreat. Deeply comfortable beds, cosy corners with sofas and bright, airy spaces promote a feeling of total chill.

Taking inspiration from nature, the rooms have a soft palette of mushroom greys, neutrals and cream with Alpine timber headlining the décor, creating a link to the mountains, traditional regional architecture and also the choice of wood as a soothing, scented material to add a soft ambience to the bedroom. There’s a lot of options when it comes to picking your room from exclusive lofts with private saunas, family suites with bunk beds plus a private jetty to the bathing lake to cosy and traditional chalet suites which come with loden, wood and other regionally sourced materials, keeping the feel very Alpine chic.

Foodie

Being immersed in the mountains and nature, food in the kitchens of the Hotel Forsthofgut is naturally treated with respect and passion, and as a result, was awarded a coveted Green Toque for its organic credentials. Their own farm, Mauthof is a source of bountiful and fresh food, located on the sunny terraces of lush Leogang, at around 1,000 metres above sea level. As Forsthofgut was originally a farm, it creates an honest and pleasing circularity to develop their own agricultural production where sheep, geese and pigs graze the meadows and herbs, berries and mushrooms can be gathered in the shady forests.

Forsthofgut has developed a three-pronged philosophy to guide their food culture: Neighbourly Love, Vegan Love and Regional Love.

Your day begins with a Breakfast Market of carefully sourced delicacies. Small market stands present products of selected quality: stroll from counter to counter and choose what tastes best to you. The coffee bar, the bakery, the cheese dairy, the butcher's shop, the juice bar and the vegan foliage become a delicatessen meeting place.

MIZUMI - Japanese Restaurant

The lakeside restaurant Mizumi has an open show kitchen and prepares an interesting combo of Japanese and Austrian culinary art.

Restaurant 1617

The à la carte Restaurant 1617 serves the classics of Austrian cuisine, the name is a tribute to the 400-year history of the Forsthofgut.

Fine Dining Restaurant echt. gut essen.

The hotel also boasts a fabulously cosy, 20 covers, fine dining restaurant set within aged timbers of the Altholzstube, guests of the hotel, as indeed locals, can feast on the modern fusions of traditional classics as prepared by Gourmet Chef Michael Helfrich.

"If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise" for you won't find any bears, but one of the best Alpine inspired luxury spas in Austria and the first Forest-Spa concept to hit the Leogang mountains.

Spa

The recent addition of the Seehaus in the middle of the garden with onsen pool, lakeside pool, lakeside sauna, three garden loft suites and the Japanese restaurant Mizūmi complements the Forsthofgut.

The Waldspa is in itself a triumph of this design philosophy created by Austrian planning and design studio, Geisler.Trimmel. Taking the raw essence of 'berg' life and the harsh realities, the barren rocky peaks, meadows, forests and climate have been distilled into a zone of connected wellness. Forest Spa naturally applies eco-friendly architecture and thoughtful, creative design to capture the essence of the Alps. A sympathetic spa world extending from the wellness zones and out into the land sees smart architectural design houses, including several new sauna features that include a library (never had that before in the spa), a fireside lodge inspired-chill room of designer chairs and comfort corners and a fabulous tea lounge set in the greens of the trees.

Fitness is well and truly on the agenda at Forsthofgut Hotel with its workout studios, great outdoor yoga platform and indoor spinning bikes. Water babes will fall in love with the organic, natural spring water swimming pond - complete with reed decked loungers, the Kneipp Mountain Stream, and the new 25m length outdoor pool that floats above the landscape.

Onsite there are also the Forest Massage zones where you just let yourself drift off into the scent of the pines. Treatments here are done using another hero of nature - the Austrian apothecary, Alpienne - created by passionate Alpinist Reinhard Schuler back in the late 80's. Using all-natural products from Austria's Tyrol, they handmake everything using time-consuming processes that allow them to extract the Phyto-substance and bio powers. Signatures here include the Marmot Oil - Gentian Root Sports massage and the Edelweiss Facials.  The Forest Spa is a journey in itself and offers a soulful adventure into the woods with a magical bond to nature.

Sauna enthusiasts will go into overload with the sheer options open to them at Forsthofgut, especially the special WaldSpa features - including the Spruce Sauna and the Rose Quartz Organic Sauna. Many of the rooms also have stunning uninterrupted views of the mountains, including the micro-salt-cabin and its fabulous Cold Water Cliff Showers.

Kids & Co.

The waldSPA Family & Kids with a children's water world, water workshop and 70-metre long slide with timings, ensures lots of water fun for the whole family.

Other highlights are the nature workshop with a painting studio for crafts and painting and the parent-child room, which offers plenty of space to play and romp around 24 hours a day.

A very family-friendly hotel, Forsthofgut has 44 family rooms and suites as well as a separate family spa.

With a mini-farm, a kid’s club with daily childcare, a ski club in winter, a separate children’s buffet in the evening and free rental of adult and children’s buggies and bikes, as well as a weekly guided family BBQ and hike, children will always be well entertained. Local attractions include bike and toboggan routes from outside the hotel as well as nursery slopes and a ski kindergarten.

Location

Forsthofgut's setting in Leogang appears to have been created by nature itself, set within a 30,000m² meadow at the foot of Austria's Leogang Steinberge Mountains (affectionately known as the Leogang Rockies).

The hotel's landscape sports a forest and organic lake and has direct access in winter to the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn ski region. Village life is just on the doorstep.

Owners

Christoph & Christina Schmuck are the talk of the mountains with their spa creations at this Austrian Alpine retreat – taking over the helms from their parents, this dynamic couple revel in going a little against the grain of normal – if they can source a better way to capture their beloved Forsthofgut, then they move mountains to do so.

These pair are the warmest of hearty souls with the Alps in their roots, making them the natural hosts, and they know how to cater for the modern nomads & families; they work tirelessly so you can just chillax and enjoy the fruits of their labours.
