Subdued hues and structural clean lines that work in synergy with the great outdoors, letting snowy panoramas take centre stage

Intro

Ullrhaus Hotel & Spa is located in the centre of ski heaven St. Anton am Arlberg, and it sings from the chilled hymn sheet of subdued modernism with a heritage palette of Alpinist charisma. Calculated simplicity translates with ease to pared-back luxury with a quiet respect for supressed hues and structural clean lines that caress the great outdoors, letting snowy panoramas take centre stage.

Using this strong hotel-design dialogue with nature as a touchpoint, Ullrhaus has been worked on by one of the hottest interior designers, Munich-based architect Stephanie Thatenhorst. Her signature urban touch of natural fabrics and materials see a style narration of hessian rugs, swathes of smooth pine flooring plus mellow timber panelling adding to the feel of cocooning nature with a modern hand. Natural, raw materials and a passion for the crafts root her concepts with handcrafted elements, carpentry, hand woven textiles and traditional loom fabrics.

All 40 rooms at Ullrhaus follow a chic style journey and natural colour palette. Earthy taupes, soft greys, mushroom browns and warm timber cloak the rooms in comfort, and large windows flanked by white muslin drapes look out onto a snow-flecked scene.

Superior doubles are light-filled with a simple décor, balconies and smart bathrooms with rain showers. Suites are more roomy affairs that come with Nespresso machines and mini-bars, and cosy cushioned living areas that demand to be hunkered down in.

Those travelling as a group may want to treat themselves to a larger suite such as the Galzig or the Rendl which sleep up to six and have private saunas, free-standing tubs, wine fridges and spacious living areas. The Ullr Rooftop Suite is the one to plump for if views are your thing. The panoramic terrace will give you your fill of mountain peaks, icy air and sunny afternoons.

Dining at Ullrhaus is an informal yet epicurean affair. Pad down to the high stools pulled up to the timber bar, warmed by the indoor fire pit for cocktails before dinner – then take your place at a table for two or at the communal long table with old and new friends.

Local delicacies grace the menu with fare from the mountains dominating plates. There’s an ample wine list to choose a mellow blend to accompany the food. Come morning, breakfast has an Alpine influence with yoghurts, cheese and cured meats, freshly baked pastries and just-pressed juices. An ideal combination to fire up energy levels before a day on the mountains.

Wellness

The soothing tones of Ullrhaus are already set to relaxation mode, and its underground spa takes chilling a notch further for those happy to succumb.

Decked out in more of those easy-on-the-eye furnishings, wood-panelled walls and smooth concrete floors, the spa’s centrepiece is the 17-metre swimming pool. Edged by deep loungers in charcoal grey and lit by twinkling candles lanterns it’s a lovely spot for a few candlelit lengths. The spa has three wood-scented saunas with varying degrees of temperatures and benefits to slide more deeply into a chilled frame of mind. The fitness zone’s power sports equipment will satisfy any cardio-cravers and afterwards fresh juice, spring water and loose-leaf teas can be taken in the relaxation room.

Location

Ullrhaus is located in the resort of St. Anton in the Tyrolean Alps, home to some of the Alps’ most exhilarating skiing, with access to over 200 miles of runs and plenty of off-piste within the peaks of Arlberg. St. Anton was, in fact, the first ski club in the Alps, back in 1901.

Today, the town is famed for its hedonistic apres-ski scene, winter festivals and vibrant dining. However, the gabled chalets, glorious jagged peaks and pine forests still retain an authentic Alpine charm. Accessible by three airports, you can reach St. Anton from Innsbruck, Zurich and Munich.

Owners

Teenage sweethearts Franziska Alber and Michael Gfall

Teenage sweethearts Franziska Alber and Michael Gfall’s story began right here in St. Anton where they both grew up and their family histories were woven into the very traditions of this famed ski town.

A born-and-bred St. Anton couple, they declare ‘everything to be possible as a team.’ And this certainly seems to be the case with a family of four children and now their fifth baby – style-laden Ullrhaus.

Franziska comes from a long line of creatives who have combined design with sport including her grandfather who turned from shoemaking to ski boot making when downhill skiing was discovered in St. Anton.

Michael Gfall has been wowing friends, family, international guests and visitors with his culinary prowess since he was fifteen years old, finessing his craft at some of Arlberg’s finest restaurants before bringing his passion for local produce to Ullrhaus.

Together they combine their skills in contemporary detailing and design to warmly welcome guests to this super-cool minimalist pad in vibrant St. Anton.
