Zillertal

Austria

The Austrian Zillertal region in Tirol is a wonderful melange of 365-days-open ski, a mountaineers and outdoor enthusiast paradise, whilst traditional and the heritage flourishes; lush farming meadows, slow foodie heroes, berg cheeses like Heumilchkäse - a tangy cheese made from milk given by cows fed only on fresh mountain hay, Alpine folklore, customs and is famous for its music (not the sound of).

Zillertal is approximately 4okm east of regional capital Innsbruck and flanked by the Kitzbühel and Tux Alps to the west, is known as the world’s largest skiing valley, Zillertal also features 1,400km of hiking trails and 1,200km cycling routes. The Zillertal Alps Nature Park with its 80 glaciers and numerous peaks over 3,000m.

The stunningly beautiful Zillertal valley stretches from Hochfügen and Kaltenbach to the northeast, through Zell am Ziller and its linked village of Gerlos, to the Hintertux glacier, open all year, at the far end to the south.

It is said that every family in Zillertal is somehow connected to music – from brass bands, folk gesung to good old knee slapping oompah; these mountain musicians fill the valleys with notes.

So with beauty nature, mountains, waterfalls, snow-sure pistes and a thriving Alpine culture, Zillertal is perfect for ski, cross-country trekking, biking, zip wire runs, feasting and a little singing all the way from Hart to Fügen.
