Intro

Purist alpine craftsmanship, muted design, and an elegance of simplicity headline private-hire house and apartments of style, Haus Aerli, found in the Austrian village of Ehrwald in Tirol and cradled in the foothills of the Zugspitze, the tallest peak of the Wetterstein massif.

A contemporary private den for discerning design lovers, Haus Aerli’s allure lies in its less-is-more construct and aesthetic, a harmonious marriage of tradition meets modernity, continuing and furthering the strong architectural alpine remit of Tyrolean design. The bold Tirol-style gabled roofs are inspired by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and the natural wood façade is made-to-fade, eventually edging into a silvery-grey camouflage, which says everything about this unpretentious, muted refuge. Described as a modern interpretation of the Tyrolean hay barn, owners and sisters Sarah and Emily made a conscious decision to remove the distractions of today’s world during the build of Haus Aerli. Designed by a Dutch architect, the result is a groomed and restrained haven where the passing of time is noted by the sun, convos with friends and long walks in nature.

Aerli may be a modern interpretation of the mountain chalet, but the familiar roster of timbers root the boutique-hotel-inspired interiors of the three apartments totally into the Austrian Alps of Tirol. Accenting the materials in neutral form: lime plaster, ash flooring, stone and solid woods cosy up the remit. Clever small pockets of visual drama courtesy of Austrian architect and interior designer Josef Frank’s wallpaper – spot the distinctive strokes of ‘Varklocker’ print while large panoramic windows let light and vistas flood in.

Outside is a sensory oasis where garden fragrances and scented herbs mingle with fresh mountain air; the sauna and enticing natural dipping pond encourage more connection with the outdoors. Your portal to nature pure, mountain freshness and muted cool, Aerli is a style hotspot for understated aesthetes.

With just three fully equipped apartments in Haus Aerli, you can choose to be a lovingly tended-to house guest or take over the whole house with a group of friends or family, giving you the ultimate private space in this timber bastion, located in Ehrwald.

Sleeping ten in total, Haus Aerli is split into two, two-bedroom apartments (sleeping four in each) and one smaller space that sleeps two. Throughout all the apartments is a smooth, crafted design, cocooned by silver fir timber, stone and glass with the mountains making good use of the large window panels. Solid beds and wooden furniture give the rooms a grounded feel of quality and the apartments have space for cooking and dining, as well as cosy nooks, balconies and window seats for gazing at the view with a glass of wine in hand.

Location

Backed by the towering peaks of the rugged Zugspitze, part of the Wetterstein Massif, Haus Aerli has a natural melodrama to its surroundings where granite-grey mountains meet pine forests which roll down into wildflower meadows. In this most scenic of locations is the village of Ehrwald, an alpine settlement of pure charm which dates back to 1274. Small white churches dot the scene alongside timber chalets and pretty guesthouses overflowing with flowery pot plants.

With the beauty of the surrounding alps right on your doorstep, Haus Aerli affords easy access to nature and the highlights of the region from hiking, climbing, wild swimming the lakes and even a spot of summertime golf in Talkessel. With the all-seasons Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car, visitors reach 3,000 metres above sea level and the Fascination Zugspitze interactive museum which is a surprisingly immersive exhibition charting the history of the mountain. Of course, when snow blankets the scene, everyone clicks into their skis to access the three different ski resorts Ehrwalder Alm, Wettersteinbahnen and Zugspitzplatt.

Owners

Sisters Sarah and Emily Schwarz | Aerli Apartments Tirol | Boutique Holiday Home close to the Zugspitze in Ehrwald, Austria, Europe.

A powerful sibling bond is behind the construct  of style bolthole Haus Aerli. Sisters Sarah and Emily Schwarz set about using their passion and attention to detail to recreate a new alpine experience where antlers and fustiness are gone, replace by a cool new aesthetic: pared back and modern.

However, their ethos extends to a certain lifestyle at Haus Aerli, where plenty of thought has gone into the way they would like guests to relax. Emily says, "We focused on details and left out unimportant factors like lavish decorations and TVs. Our goal was to create a small haven of peace that we ourselves would enjoy.” We think the Schwarz’s have far exceeded their goal with Haus Aerli – come see for yourself.
