Known as the heart of the Alps, the state of Tirol is found in western Austria, an archetypal region of mountain peaks, scented meadows, cultural enclaves and a wholesome way of life which seems to thrive on fresh alpine air.
Writer and 19th century poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once wrote of Tirol, “Here I have finally found a place of quiet, a place of peace, the like of which I could have only wished for.” And although today, its capital Innsbruck is a busy hotspot and cultural city, it is true to say that a certain serenity blankets Tirol.
With over 500 peaks reaching 3,000 metres and more than 600 glaciers along the main alpine ridge, Tiroleans love the great outdoors and take pleasure from alpine adventures all year round. Skiers have an abundant choice of resorts, runs and pistes across the mountains from St Anton to Zillertal, Gurgl to Lech am Arlberg, all of which in summer transform and bloom into carpets of flowers, glittering lakes and scenic altitudinous beauty.
The mountain lifestyle also pervades the Tirolean culinary heritage of cheese, meats, herbsand countless other contributions peppering menus in mountain huts, cosy restaurants and fine-dining establishments. A cuisine which was created out of the need for satisfying mountain fare, today visitors and locals alike delight in hearty staples such as kasspatzln, kaiserschmarren and platters of cold meats and cheese.
Many access this Tirolean mountain paradise via Innsbruck which is not only the gateway to the region but is home to indicators of Austria’s past, historic sights and beautifully preserved heritage architecture. Gothic and Baroque icons of the Habsburg Empire stand proudly in juxtaposition to modern architectural structures by Zaha Hadid. The gleaming Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) built for Emperor Maximilian I is one of the city’s landmarks as is the Imperial Palace and Triumphal Arch.
Testament to the regions strong cultural, there are plenty of museums that shed light on Tirolean way of life including the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum (Museum of Regional Heritage) and the Schloss Ambras Innsbruck with its notable Habsburg Portrait Gallery. Gaze reverently, then head out to the mountains to experience it all for yourself.
