Intro

A contemporary cluster of six timber lodges in the Bregenzerwald region of Vorarlberg, Fuchsegg Eco Lodge in Schetteregg reworks Austrian Alpine tradition with the quiet assurance that comes from a narrative of conscious design, ardent sustainability and a whisper of Japanesque calm.

A poetic fusion of Alpine heritage and modern restraint, Fuchsegg is the vision of owners Carmen Can and Heinz Hämmerle, realised by Ludescher + Lutz Architekten. Here, old-world craft meets contemporary clarity.

The Vorsäss settlement, once a simple cluster of herders’ huts, becomes the blueprint for something altogether more cultured. Built almost entirely from local wood, clay and stone, the materials have barely changed in centuries, yet the composition feels utterly current; a wholesome bolthole rooted at the cultural crossroads where Austria, Germany and Switzerland meet, close to Lake Constance (Bodensee).

A study in quiet radicalism, Fuchsegg Eco Lodge treats sustainability as instinct rather than ideology. Every detail has intent: the way the timber rests on the slope, how façades breathe, and how light moves through silver fir and spruce.

The architecture carries a Japanese composure, calm and precise, aware of silence as part of the form. Ma exists here – that pause where stillness becomes design. Materials are handled with reverence: joints visible, finishes soaped rather than sealed, beauty found in texture rather than gloss.

Inside, the spirit of the Bregenzerwald is tangible; in conversation with wabi-sabi, where restraint finds its grace and the imperfect becomes quietly beautiful.

Maple tables by Tischlerei Mohr, solid elm beds, wool-felt textiles and a touch of natural theatre courtesy of local alchemist Gerold Ulrich, whose black limestone wall, fired in the Kanisfluh lime tradition, speaks of patience and craft. Crushed blueberry hues, drawn from the surrounding meadows, thread softly through the interiors, a cool contrast to the warmth of fir and brushed oak.

Ash and elm floors meet the grain of handcrafted furniture, while wool felt and Grünig Quarzit stone keep each surface honest. Even the clay casein plaster underfoot feels deliberate, every step connecting body to place.

Ecological Sleeping Beauties

The lodges, lofts and chalets at Fuchsegg are shaped for stillness. From the timber façades to the elm-framed bedchambers, every element encourages rest. The rooms range from four-person lofts to cocooning suites, each anchored by solid wood beds made from local elm and ash, complemented by handcrafted natural sleep systems from Tischlerei Hubert Feldkircher, Polsterei Mohr and Samina.

High ceilings, wood-burning stoves, daybeds, soft natural fibres and a shifting play of light lend a quiet rhythm to each space. Every lodge faces east or west, catching the Alpine glow through rotating timber slats that choreograph shade and shadow. Fresh interiors borrow from tradition yet remain unmistakably modern, the soul of Vorarlberg renewed with purpose.

At the heart sits the sauna house and heated pool, where steam and snow meet in perfect rhythm. Wellness here is elemental rather than indulgent: a walk through the forest, a session in Fuchsegg’s TechnoGym, a plunge, a pause by the fire. The spa, finished in natural white lime and sealed with Marseille soap, completes the story of purity and craft. Infrared, steam, bio pine and Finnish saunas are furnished with natural materials, from silver quartzite stone floors to local fir wood and aromatic cedar. It is, quite literally, nature within nature.

Culinary Spirit

The kitchen follows the same philosophy as the architecture: minimal, regional, precise. Ingredients are local and seasonal, handled with integrity and restraint. Thursday’s Bregenzerwälder Kässpätzle night is a much-loved ritual — molten mountain cheese, butter, crisp onions and a wooden spoon.

The approach recalls Japanese purity and discipline. Technique over flourish, flavour over fuss. Dishes such as Alpine beef with field potatoes are served with the quiet confidence of something honestly made.

Wine is a natural extension of life in the Bregenzerwald, with a cellar that favours Austrian classics, organic newcomers and a few rebellious natural vintages.

Spirit of Place

Fuchsegg lies in Schetteregg, a hamlet of Egg, deep in the central Bregenzerwald: that fertile meeting point of the wild and the refined, where architecture and nature live in harmony. At just over 1,000 metres, it sits within the Three-Country Corner near Lake Constance (Bodensee), where the peaks of Austria, the lakeside culture of Germany and the easy style of Switzerland all converge.

The Bregenzerwald is a landscape of soft ridges, wild peaks and quietly assured communities. Its people are proud yet modest, rooted in craft but open to the new. As local poet Johann Gebhard Wölfle wrote, “We honour the old and greet the new, and remain true to ourselves and our homeland.”

The region’s cultural fabric runs deep: timber workshops, architecture collectives, music festivals, dairies and the celebrated Werkraum Bregenzerwald all keep making at the heart of life. In summer, pastures bloom with wild herbs and cheese trails weave between farms; there are more than 450 kilometres of cycling and hiking paths across the Bregenzerwald and into the nearby Allgäu. In winter, Schetteregg transforms into a snow-laden playground for families, skiers and wanderers chasing the hush of the season.
