Pleasingly bumpy vases, misshapen bowls, muted-hued glazed cups, irregular plates – these are the characteristics of Gregor Titzes ceramic work. But when you learn a little of how he works, it brings an understanding to the form of his objects.

Titzes sources his materials from the ground - every part of his creations are made from the local soil and stones which he processes himself. Becoming obsessed with the geological wonder of the earth, he now knows everything about loam, clay, mud and feldspar and works with materials formed millions of years ago. With his collected clay he still experiments every time with self-glazes, firing the kiln and chemical formulas, hence the pleasing way each object comes out differently.

Story

Gregor Titzes | Founder of Studionero | Digging for clay | Crafted, Design Ceramics, Vienna, Austria | The Aficionados

Born in Vienna, Austria in 1981, Gregor Titzes was a child who was constantly fascinated by materials, surfaces and shapes. As a young adult this interest in form lead him to study architecture with a photographic focus at the Technical University of Vienna. His attention to detail in the environment served him well and he returned as an adult in 2019 to lecture here.

With a photographic studio in Vienna that serves his commercial arm, in the countryside of Lower Austria, he enjoys the slow lane in his workshop, always questioning clay and the answers it gives him. When he is not firing up the kiln or potter’s wheel, he is outside in the forests, quarries or simply digging a hole in the garden searching for wild clay. His unique designs and original way of working has caught the eye of sustainable restaurateurs and eco-chefs, who have partnered with him - his ceramics have graced the tables of environmentally conscious folks such as Mraz & Sohn in Vienna.

Stand Out

An alchemist of the earth, Gregor Titzes’ work is both from the past and simultaneously futuristic – in other words, timeless.
