Angus Ross

From a bluebell wood in Perthshire to a smoothly sculpted piece of furniture for a special spot, Angus Ross is a wood crafter and expressive designer of extraordinary proportions.

The first step of the bespoke furniture journey from woodland to one-of-a-kind piece is to look at the bluebell wood itself. Understanding the nature of felling trees, as Angus Ross does, is important – as its beneficial for both the wood and the exquisite furniture the felled tree it will eventually become. By removing specific trees from the wood, more light penetrates, allowing the remaining trees to flourish and woodland wildlife to thrive.

Once Ross’ skilled eye has selected a suitable tree from the native woodland, the process can begin. Usually Ross works with commissions for private and public spaces and so a journey starts where Ross translates sketches, ideas and purpose into a solid thing of carved beauty, often starting with a 3D model. From smooth dining room tables to National Trust benches, one-off art pieces, to eye-catching bar areas for in-crowd restaurants and that perfectly sized ‘work-from-home’ desk, working with Angus Ross is a creative process where the customer is privy to a true master at work.

With a degree in Industrial Design from Napier University, Edinburgh Angus Ross went straight to the top of the commercial design ladder, designing moulded plastic products for the likes of Glaxo Smith Kline and Boots. However, he quickly tired of the limitations of mass manufacturing, craving a more tactile, creative quality to his work.

After studying furniture making at Rycotewood College in Oxford, Ross found a way to combine his design knowledge with a practical skill that gave him great pleasure. Together with his wife Lorna, they took the plunge, moving to Aberfeldy in the Highlands of Perthshire to a workshop by a bluebell wood. Here he honed his craft, working on his signature style of curving, slicing and bending wood, producing his innovative and expressive furniture.

In 2020, Angus Ross won ‘Best Sustainable Product’ at Decorex International 2020 for his Prism Chair in Scottish ash with hand-twisted rush seat, marking him as a standout designer.
