The essence of Swiss Ski resort Saanen in the Canton of Bern, is, despite rubbing shoulders with glitzy village of Gstaad, all about the fusion of Bernese chocolate box allure dating back to the 16th century and cultural sophistication, a sort of Alpine menagerie of Bergkäs, fab wooden clad restaurants and concerts by local resident, Yehudi Menuhin.
Skiing in the Gstaad & the Saanenland (one of the largest areas in the Alps) offers some 250km of pistes at altitudes up to 3000m. and boasts a huge variety of offers for snowboarders and skiers. The region is also known to be very family-friendly.
There are countless scenic slopes and cross-country ski runs in the ski areas Châteux-d'Oex, Glacier 3000, Rellerli, Rougemont-Saanen-Gstaad, Wasserngrat, Wispile and Zweisimmen. Glacier skiing and helicopter skiing are also possible.
Freestylers and snowboarders can use one of the 4 snow parks with diverse slope style possibilities: the Vannillaz Playground, the Monsterpark Glacier 3000, the HighLand Park or the Snowpark in Zweisimmen.
There are four Airports within a two hours drive, Bern Airport being the closest with just over an hours drive away - so ski weekends, snowboard breaks and short ski holidays to Saanen are perfectly feasible.
