In the heart of Austria’s ski domain, and only around 70 kilometres south of Salzburg is a network of villages, mountains and pistes that together form Snow Space Salzburg, part of Austria’s Ski Amadé.
With around 120 kilometres of groomed pistes connected by 45 high-tech cable car systems – there’s a lot of snowy ground to cover for the ski enthusiast. Linked by three villages Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann – Alpendorf, the region benefits from spellbinding panoramic landscapes, 850-metres above sea level, the topography is characterised by snow-dusted peaks and an extensive network of slopes and pistes giving you wide access to the powder.
Exploring the whole region, your first touchpoint into Snow Space Salzburg is likely to be Pongau district capital St. Johann and the Alpendorf Skiing area. Made up of 90 % blue and red slopes, the ski area of St. Johann is a good place for beginners, families and those that like to take it easy on the slopes.
Perhaps slightly more on the ski tourist route is mountain village Wagrain, located in the middle of the Snow Space Salzburg ski area. A popular choice for families, Wagrain is home to the ski adventure park Wagrainis Winter World where little ones can have family-friendly fun on the Magic Carpet Snow Tube, kids’ snow park or snow merry-go-round.
The village of Flachau is known for the iconic slalom race that takes place here once a year. When night falls, watch the exhilarating Audi FIS Ski World Cup Women's Night Slalom.
As every dedicated skier knows, refuelling is an important part of the day. And here in Snow Space Salzburg, there are a plethora of mountain huts to choose from, dusted around the whole region. Whether you prefer a chic and modern pitstop for fizz, views and contemporary cuisine for lunch or favour the homeliness of traditional huts, fireside with spätzle noodles and kaiserschmarrn, you can find both.
And in the unlikely event that you need more ski than Snow Space Salzburg can provide, head to the neighbouring villages – this mountainous terrain is a true ski paradise, - connect with adjoining ski areas Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl and Skiparadies Zauchensee, with total of 210 kilometres of pistes and 70 lifts. The fun won’t ever stop!
