Spedition Hotel & Restaurant - a small design boutique hotel in Thun, Switzerland
A bijou design hotel and foodie den laced in a plush hipness of crushed velvets, soft linens, aged oak beams and lovely quirky accessories

Intro

A former cheese warehouse cast in chalked whites and pewter-grey shutters, this 120-year-old building of affinage is now the postmark of the Spedition Hotel & Restaurant - a small design boutique hotel that is home to casual hipness and is an insanely popular pit-stop in Bernese Oberland's gorgeous historic town of Thun, Switzerland. Spedition Hotel is all about the design references to the building's provenance - which have been cleverly harnessed and are beautifully exposed. Heritage caresses the dapper interiors with simple elegance, as created by hospitality veterans Stylt Trampoli AB -  an en vogue creative and design agency based in Gothenburg.

The ground-floor boutique interiors of the Spedition Hotel & Restaurant play host to mingling, all-day dining and are light, spacy and geared for sociability where the kitchen takes centre stage – not forgetting our favourite perch on the veranda. Move upstairs and the design gear is plush, seductive and chilled with a gorgeous palette of petrol blues, aubergines and canary golds that hug the twisted oak beams. Winner of the global award for hotel interiors by the prestigious Prix Versailles in 2017, the Spedition conveys that subtle feeling of being at home, to be staying in a best friend’s hip loft - complete with pleasingly unrefined knots to the wooden rafters. Crushed velvets, wing-back chairs, sultry woods, tree-lined wallpapers, artworks and designer lighting are smoothly married with playful whimsical touches – artefacts from umbrella handles and antique cobbler’s lasts to wine labels and model railway cars nod towards the wonderfully eclectic.

Spedition is no off-the-shelf boutique hotel – it has a story to tell, narrated by the likes of: Sängar, Designers Choice, Casarosa, Gervasoni, Miró Miró, Örsjö, Milla Design, Delius, Casa Rosa/ Kirkby, Trapiche & Co, Bankeryd/Pholc, JAB, Globo, Tapwell, MYSON, Aliseo, Cosmic, Vega.

Spedition Hotel & Restaurant is contemporary-chic in a historic build, a loft of style filled with thoughtful design elements and a signature of urban cool in the tiny town of Thun, Switzerland.

Rooms

Spedition Hotel & Restaurant - a small design boutique hotel in Thun, Switzerland

This gastro city hub has just fifteen rooms, keeping the vibe intimate and chilled. Using its 100-year-old heritage as a starting point, the rooms are layered with heavy oak beams and wooden floors lending their weight of history. To compliment this, earthy tones and natural materials make up the interior design, and plum colours in deep velvets, richly decorated quilts and mahogany bureaus add to the visual drama and all-round classiness of the rooms.

The perfect bolthole of style for city slickers or visitors to town, Spedition’s rooms have just the right amount of chic style whilst keeping you in close comfort.

Chef and Swiss tv celeb Adrian Tschanz, aka the ‘kitchen rocker’, loves to rethink the gastro favourites - a rebel and natural locavore

Foodie

Serving nothing but plates of taste, farm-to-table deliciousness rocks at the Spedition. A fabulously casual eatery spans the ground floor and spills over onto an open veranda, this foodie hub follows the mantra of being local, simple, good and tasty – it is a popular gastro joint for both locals and visitors alike.

Location

Spedition Hotel & Restaurant faces the historic and incredibly ‘instagrammable’ cute medieval town of Thun affording fantastic views of the town’s landmark, the 12thcentury castle, Schloss Thun and the Alpine drama cast by the mountainous Bernese Oberland.

Convenient for the train station and minutes from Thun’s main shopping districts on Bälliz, the hotel is located close to the banks of the famous River Aare full of cafes and hangouts. Not far from here is the stunning Thunersee (Thuner Lake) and Lake Brienz with the resort town of Interlaken just 30km away.

“I like to create spaces people feel drawn to, feel at ease in, comfortable in and sort of feels immediately familiar with good food and design at its heart – oh and with a big welcome. This is what running a hotel and restaurant is all about, something my parents taught me from an early age.” - Daniel Mani

The Game Changers

Spedition is fortunate to count three pioneering icons from the modern hospitality trade behind the creation – each with a particular skill set that helps define what being a modern hotelier is all about. The trio – two brothers and fellow industry insider, are long-time friends and already have had several success stories under their entrepreneurial belts. With pitstops in Swiss hotel legends, the trio are determined pioneers of casual luxury – "all the services, all the style - just not the stiff pretence.”

“hotels of modern luxury are relaxed in nature with excellent service and stylish in ambience.” - Günter Weilguni

Daniel Mani

Being born into a family of long established restauranteurs, it was a natural journey for owner and host Daniel Mani to continue the family legacy. After graduating Daniel wasted no time in working alongside industry legends like Jacky Donitz (Hotel Zürich) and at the tender age of 25 starting his first business venture.

A lecturer, entrepreneur, gastronome, and hotelier, Daniel is an ambitious character with an infectious passion for hospitality and his beloved homeland of Switzerland. In creating the Spedition Hotel & Restaurant, he put Thun back on the map and he is only just starting – watch this space.

Günter Weilguni

Günter Weilguni also learned his trade from scratch. After graduating from hotel business school in Zurich and completing courses at Cornell University in New York, he gained his first professional experience on cruise ships. Subsequent posts included Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich and Sunstar in Grindelwald. Crowned “Hotelier of the Year” in 2017, Günter is a marketing guru with a clear understanding of what today’s traveller seeks in a hotel, he explains that “hotels of modern luxury are relaxed in nature with excellent service and stylish in ambience.”

"guest should always be centre-stage and our role is about providing an experience beyond just accommodation.” - Manfred Weilguni

Manfred Weilguni

After completing culinary training and graduating from Thun Hotel Management School, Manfred Weilguni held the posts of F&B Manager and deputy-director at Seiler Hotels Zermatt, Grand Park Hotel in Gstaad and Alpine Lodge in Saanen.

With a number of hotel success stories, Manfred is a passionate hotelier who believes that the "guest should always be centre-stage and our role is about providing an experience beyond just accommodation.”
