The House of Nouveau

The little Villa Flor is a creative design hotel in Switzerland's arty Alpine village of S-Chanf in Upper Engadin, a restored home inspired by Art Nouveau and modernism - this small boutique hotel is home to the creative scene, and is much loved by artists, writers and design aficionados alike.

Villa Flor takes the intimacy of a private urban guesthouse and the allure of a Bed & Breakfast, combining it with restored interiors that are stylish, inviting, eclectic and wonderfully original.

Interiors are decked in peacock turquoise, warm ochre and vivid reds as ornate flowing motifs cloak the stencilled walls, dancing across the airy rooms in syncopated rhythm.

This is truly a snapshot of the playful, the romantic and the Art Nouveau with a very clever style intervention borrowed from the 50s - all balanced by the solidness of the warm parquet floors.

This richly decorated and irresistibly comfy urban villa whispers creative confidence in style and utter sophistication - this is hotel Villa Flor in Upper Engadin, where the bling of nearby St. Moritz is artfully tamed.

Like your fab, funky friend who always mixes up her styles, yet still always looks on point, the rooms at Villa Flor are an enviable style swatch of colours, trends and patterns which, in our opinion is totally spot on.

Known as the ‘house of seven rooms’, each comes lavishly decorated without losing sight of the ultimate aim: comfort. Eclectic finds from flea markets dot the sleeping quarters alongside family heirlooms, designer pieces and patterns that run the gauntlet from tartan, stripes to birch wallpaper by Canadian artist Francesca Gabbiani. The confident mix just works and makes staying here a delight.

This is seriously a little off-radar for most folk - this is more the home of the creative scene than that of the glitz of nearby St. Moritz - even more of a reason for you to like discovering this little house of Deco meets mid-century style

Location

Close to the banks of the River Inn, Villa Flor is located in the little Alpine village of S-Chanf in Upper Engadin, about a 20-minute drive north of St. Moritz, with access to the Glacier and Bernina Express trains, and just a short 4-minute drive to the ancient medieval town of Zuoz. Villa Flor also provides fantastic access to the Swiss National Park at the Val Trupchun.

The Engadin Valley is home to an amazing art scene since the first gallery opened here in the 1960s, modern and contemporary art galleries line the valley, including Hauser & Wirth in St. Moritz.

Owner

Ladina Florineth’s return to her hometown following long stints abroad meant that she also applied to her hotel Villa Flor her worldly sense of design – and being a creative herself, Villa Flor was the perfect canvas with which to restore a house of design with her sense of urban style.

It is very much a house of Ladina, made up of lots of personal accents, a lot of hard work and heaps of confidence - helping her to design something a bit different in this little mountain village.
