Berchtesgadener Land

Germany

Characterised by the peninsula that edges into Austria, Berchtesgadener Land is located on the most south-eastern tip of Germany, in Bavaria. Alongside its outstanding natural beauty that attracts hikers, bikers and skiers, you’ll find towns steeped in history with a royal family roll call to boot, favoured over time by Bavarian kings and queens. Dotted in between are heritage spa towns that still headline wellness to this day.

Wrapped by alpine loveliness, the Berchtesgaden National Park has an extraordinarily diverse landscape to contend with. Bordered by towering cliffs, the park also benefits from dense forests, gushing rivers, waterfalls and undulating valleys dotted with untouched flora and shy wildlife such as the ibex, red deer and the golden eagle which you may be lucky enough on spot on walking trails. Lake Königssee is also another beauty spot, its emerald green waters are sheer tranquillity, explore the calm waters by boat to make the most of the dramatic rock faces and peaceful inlets.

Back in town, you’ll find traditional way of life played out over friendly welcomes. Berchtesgaden Old Town is one of those places that seems lifted from the pages of a fairy-tale with its enchanting pastel-coloured buildings, 12th century churches and cafes serving coffee and cake; for a different experience try a Bavarian beer hall for jugs of local brew with Würschtl. Traditional Bavarian dress is very much in use here, look out for those Dirndl and Lederhosen.

If your focus is on wellness, head to Bad Reichenhall, an ancient spa town built on brine springs and rich natural resources. Today, paired with modern health facilities, you can reinvigorate with fresh mountain air, hot springs and good energy. Jagged in outline, iconic Mount Watzmann presides over the Berchtesgadener Land providing ski thrills and hiking, adding another string to the bow of this wholesomely rich region.
