Allgäu

Germany

Clasped by the Bavarian Alps and found just north of the border with Austria, the picturesque region of Allgäu in southern Germany has all the quintessential hallmarks of alpine beauty. Shimmering lakes, verdant forests, fresher-than-fresh mountain air, all surrounded by jagged peaks that punctuate the panorama. Drop down into villages to a discover a culture-rich ambience brimming with Baroque churches, cobbled alleys and history that dates back to 12 AD, encircled by the Romantic Road. A route loosely based on the old Roman road, which starts at historic cities of Würzburg and Augsburg through three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, finishing off at perhaps one of the most iconic markers of this compelling land – Neuschwanstein.  The fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein has a silhouette that comes straight out of a Disney movie. In fact it was the dream of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who loved the countryside of Allgäu and decided to build his castle among the rolling hills, a place of quiet and solitude.

Nearby Hohenschwangau Castle is equally alluring, wrapped by dense forest and fortified walls, it was built by King Maximilian II of Bavaria on the ruins of a 12th century fortress. Today, visitors throng the palace, lapping up the history of its Germanic royal residents. Those interested in King Maximilian and his son Ludwig should plan a visit to the Museum of the Bavarian Kings which showcases the history of the Bavarian royal family.

The town of Füssen, located just west of the two castles reveals a charm-laden romance, with its tradition of lute and violin making, the monastery complex of St Mang amongst other cultural treasures. In winter, you can access the Alps from here to view even more dramatic snow dusted scenes around the castles or on skis for downhill thrills. The closest airports are Allgäu Airport Memmingen, Lake Constance, Munich and Stuttgart.
