Verdicchio and Truffle: Italy’s Autumn Pairing

This week’s Hotel Dispatch heads to Italy's Le Marche, where autumn writes its own theatre. By late September, the vines are thick with harvest, October drifts in with the perfume of truffle and the hills blaze gold like they have been brushed in copper leaf.

At Filodivino, owners Alida and Alberto tune into this rhythm year after year and their take on the season makes it feel even more intoxicating.

We asked them what autumn really means here, and why this is the moment for pilgrims of the good life; truffle hunts, Filodivino’s Verdicchio and fresh tagliolini...

You could say we have found the secret formula for the good life: our little design hotel, the vineyards, the landscapes and the allure of a more hushed Italy.

Le Marche has its own quiet rhythm. Medieval villages sit like storybooks on ridges, Renaissance towns hide frescoed treasures, Urbino shines with artful history and Jesi hums with cultural spirit. This region never clamours for attention yet always rewards: wine, culture and nature working in harmony like a vintage that has aged to perfection.

Autumn is never only about wine and truffles. It is also about walking slowly through hill towns without crowds, watching the light sharpen the lines of history and letting the vines guide you towards winter’s pause.

At the heart of it all is our Filodivino. For us, it is more than a place to stay; it is a way of life shaped by the vineyard. Mornings open with light spilling across the wines, afternoons drift into the spa overlooking the hills and evenings close with a glass of Verdicchio Classico Superiore and truffle tagliolini on the table.

This is the Italy we love, cradled between the Adriatic and the Sibillini Mountains close to Ancona. Hopefully, we shall see you soon. In the meantime, read more about what makes the coming weeks so very special.

Hugs,
Alida & Alberto,
Curators of Filodivino

Why September and October Are the Best Months to Visit Le Marche

The light is unique, the sunsets are extraordinary, and the hills glow in shades of gold and copper. It’s a moment when the landscape feels almost suspended in time and sharing that beauty with our guests is deeply rewarding. There’s also a sense of calm after the intensity of harvest, which makes the spa overlooking the vineyards even more precious.

Harvest is the heartbeat of our year. The vineyards are alive with energy, the air is filled with the scent of grapes and the winery is filled with a beautiful sense of anticipation. Guests who visit during this period can really feel that something special is happening all around them.
Absolutely. Everything revolves around the pace of the vines –  from the early morning light over the hills to the winery team working late into the night. Filodivino becomes a place where nature sets the rhythm, and we simply follow.

Truffle season adds its own kind of magic. How do you bring that into life at Filodivino –  is it something guests really get caught up in too?

Yes, October brings the excitement of truffle season, and Acqualagna, not far from us, is one of the most important truffle hubs in Italy. Many of our guests love to combine a stay with truffle hunting or tastings, and we often pair our wines with local truffle dishes: it’s an unforgettable match.
Truffles are celebrated everywhere in Le Marche during autumn. At Filodivino, we love to pair a simple fresh pasta like tagliolini with white truffle and a glass of our Verdicchio Classico Superiore. From October 16–19, the charming village of Morro d’Alba, listed among the most beautiful in Italy and only 7 km from Filodivino, hosts the 20th edition of Lacrima e Tartufo, an event dedicated to the unique encounter between two local treasures: Lacrima di Morro d’Alba wine and the truffles of Acqualagna, with refined dishes showcasing their perfect harmony.

Wine runs deep in Le Marche, and Filodivino honours this legacy through two iconic varietals. Verdicchio, a versatile and long-lived grape, thrives in these rolling hills, producing wines that range from crisp and vibrant to structured and age-worthy.
