Lisbon, the sun-washed Atlantic capital of light, tiles and quiet reinvention, is the new stage for Monocle's Quality of Life Conference. From Thursday 3 to Saturday 5 September 2026, the Portuguese capital will welcome a global roster of visionaries, thinkers and doers for a three-day rendezvous of fresh ideas, dynamic discussions and exceptional encounters. There is a homecoming to it, too: this is the city where the very first Quality of Life Conference took place a decade ago, and the conversation returns to where it all began.
Curated by Monocle and Winkreative and helmed by founder and editorial director Tyler Brûlé, the agenda is a deep dive into the future of urbanism, design, business and the evolving fabric of modern life, through the lens of those shaping it. A think tank for the bold, the curious, the creators of tomorrow. Where minds collide, conversations spark, and urban life gets redefined. If you shape the future, you belong here.
If there were ever a city that embodies the ethos of quality of life, Lisbon would be it. Draped across seven hills above the Tagus, the Portuguese capital has spent the years since that first conference quietly proving the point. A creative powerhouse with a deep-rooted heritage, the city pulses with artistic expression, thoughtful urban renewal and an unhurried Atlantic rhythm.
This is a place where Manueline stonework and Pombaline grids share the pavement with tram 28 and tiled façades that catch a famously clear light, where a morning pastel de nata segues into business over a plate of grilled fish and a glass of chilled vinho verde. It blends historical elegance with cutting-edge modernity, where independent bookshops, design studios and Michelin-starred kitchens coexist with lively neighbourhood mercados, fado drifting from Alfama doorways and sun-dappled miradouros. Lisbon makes for a confident stride: the ideal setting for a conversation about how cities, businesses and people can craft a smarter, more enriching way to live. The main hub this year is fitting, too: the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a modernist campus set in stunning landscaping.
Expect a carefully curated mix of speakers, architects, designers, mayors, entrepreneurs and journalists, who will take the stage to deliver fresh insights, challenge conventions and spark debate. Whether it's why some cities shine as others stumble, how the built environment can quietly heal us, why the high street still matters, or the case for simply walking it out, each session is built to inform, inspire and ignite ideas. The line-up runs from Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas and Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao to designer Joana Astolfi and the founders of the electric-buggy start-up Amble, with plenty more still to be announced (and a surprise special guest whose name Monocle is keeping firmly under wraps).
This conference thrives on energy: the kind that spills into chance conversations over an espresso, continues in lively after-hours gatherings and finds its way into new partnerships and ventures. It wouldn't be a Monocle affair without a little something extra, either, from rooftop receptions with panoramic views and private tours of Lisbon's design-forward districts to a live auction, gavel in hand and in aid of Reporters Without Borders. This is not just about sitting in a conference hall: it's about immersing yourself in a city that lives and breathes the ideas we'll be discussing.
