Well known for the high profile blood-pumping, adrenaline-rushing, pulse-racing sports events that they hold worldwide, Red Bull are now gearing up for their eighth edition of the international free ski event, Red Bull Playstreets, held in the beautiful, healing surroundings of Bad Gastein. So if anyone falls off their skis, they are probably in the perfect place.
For two days the streets of Bad Gastein and their surrounding Heilstollen ('healing tunnels') and famous thermal spring trails (once frequented by German Emperor Wilhelm I and Iran's last king Mohammad Reza Pahlavi) will be turned in to a free skiers paradise, as ramps and mountains of snow are set up to accommodate the world’s very best in free skiing hosted by Red Bull.
This year will see 19 free ski champions from 10 different nations fly over Bad Gastein’s picturesque bridges and narrowly miss the roofs of its ancient Belle Époque houses.
A fun interlude on your Austrian ski holiday, this would be a great event to watch and even possibly get some tips from (double split-legged backflips on skis, anyone?).
Found in a beautiful National Park in the Austrian Alpine region of Salzburg, Bad Gastein is a fabulous place to stay and enjoy skiing, sun and some healingly fresh mountainside air.
Our two favourite hotels in Bad Gastein are without a doubt the Miramonte Design Hotel and Boutique Hotel Haus Hirt, pleasingly owned by stylish husband and wife duo, Ike and Evelyn Ikrath. Evelyn runs the stunningly designed Haus Hirt, while Ike runs the effervescently cool Hotel Miramonte, just bit further up the hill. Stylish, cool, and with beautiful aesthetics and design throughout, both are a wonder to stay at and will leave you enchantingly calm and inspired.
