Long, airy clothing that protects from the sun all the while letting through the breeze is ideal island attire. In Mallorca, life is lived outdoors. Sebastián Pons designs the perfect attire, a Mallorcan native who’s career includes working with Miguel Adrover and Alexander McQueen – both designers known for their innovative and forward-thinking aesthetic.
In 2018, Pons launched his new line, Muchache. Its premise is as simple as it’s disruptive: one-size, gender-fluid pieces. The name is apt. The endearing terms ‘muchacho’ or muchacha’ may sound familiar; the neologism ‘muchache’ is a new proposal from Spanish LGBTQ+ groups to make these words gender fluid or neutral.
Muchache’s appeal is broad and inclusive. The pieces can be worn by people of all gender identifications, orientations, ages and body types. Says Pons: “My garments have the adaptability to flatter virtually anybody. They can become part of the aura of the person wearing them, so, in a way, they have more soul. Muchache clothes do not flatter your ego, but rather your soul; they have an ethereal quality.”
Made of light and airy fabrics like guipure lace, tencel, silk, light cotton, jersey and much more, the pieves move beautifully in the breeze and with every step. Thanks to their extra fabric – not to be confused with an oversized fit – the clothes have the ability to shift shape in a comfortable and flattering way.
Taking care to create sustainably, Pons pays attention to the many different aspects of design. All garments are produced locally at his 300-year old villa, and Pons constructs the patterns in a way that minimizes waste and sewing.
In Majorca, this feels natural. The local lifestyle is closely connected to nature, and respects it. Muchache complements this way of living, by treating people of whichever gender equally deserving of garments that are expressive, impactful and downright beautiful.
