Crafted Society work directly with Master Artisans in Italy so that we know that ‘Made in Italy’ really means that. For example, Italian loom weavers make the cashmere scarfs, with cashmere sourced from Inner Mongolia's certified suppliers. Trainers are made in the Italiansneaker atelier with leather from leading certified Italian tanneries and outsoles manufactured by the leading Italian rubber sole company Margom S.P.A. Even better, Crafted Society have reasonable prices, by cutting out any unnecessary outlays including big budget advertisingand a modest and intimate shop, rather than a showy flagship affair.

The intriguing thing about Crafted Society and its Amsterdam shop is that it is a shop front to the ecommerce business. It’s a place to browse, try on and make decisions based on your preferences. Then it’s over to the website to complete your purchase. This modern approach means customers can connect with the socially conscious brand and have a tactile experience but also use it as a regular ecommerce business.

Behind Crafted Society is husband and wife team Lise Bonnet and Martin Johnston, who met when working for Tommy Hilfiger in Amsterdam in the 90s. They become disenchanted with big name companies and wanted to create something where they were in charge and could have an impact on every step of the journey. Working with four pillars which set the tone for the company, Crafted Society was built on transparency, ethics, sustainability and social responsibility and within this came a desire for no secrecy within mark-ups and profit, which should go more directly to the makers themselves. This in turn would protect their craft for the future. A further step is that Lise Bonnet and Martin Johnston donate one per cent of annual turnover to non-profit organisations that educate disadvantaged children. Truly a sustainable and admirable model for the future.
