For all you cool cats out there who are equal fans of the mountains as you are of a good independent film, well, do we have the culture trip for you. The 22nd edition of the International Mountain Film Festival is set to open its doors October 15 - 19, 2025 by Bavaria’s beautiful Lake Tegernsee, an unmissable partnering of culture and nature that yearly has a captive, international audience.
A favourite festival of mountain climbers, film makers, nature lovers and locals, join the thousands who flock to Tegernsee’s magical Bavarian mountain surroundings for a glimpse at the stony giants who surround you in a whole new light. Mountains are celebrated and explored in increasingly varied and creative ways these days – from new bridges that are built to cross them to those athletic weirdos who can scale them using just their fingertips, to mountaintop museums dedicated to the heroes who tread them. Film is surely a broad and evocative frontier of further understanding and celebration, and one that is open to all – even those of us who stay at the bottom and just look up.
With nearly 200 films from over 30 countries in 2016, Tegernsee’s Mountain Film Festival is certainly growing, and this year is set to be the biggest yet. Get up close and personal with spectacular feats of alpine prowess, be moved by documentaries about the challenges of mountain life and be carried away by soaring feature films whose sights are set as high as the clouds.
Whether you’re biking, hiking, or just chilling in front of the screen – the mountains are open to you. Tegernsee’s town hall is marked as a hub of activity over these few October days, as film makers and mountain climbers convene at the likes of meet and greets and film workshops, putting the beauty of Bavaria just that little bit more on the map.
