Set amid the high alpine pastures of South Tyrol, the municipality of Villandro / Villanders is set within the lush confines of the Isarco Valley where green layers upon green in the folds of this pretty town, backed by the magnificence of the UNESCO protected Dolomite mountain range. Putting Villandro on the map for an astonishing 7,000 years, you can discover the commune’s ancient history at the Plunacker Archeoparc, which feature archaeological finds from Neolithic, Bronze Age to Roman times, considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the Alps. Another defining feature of this alpine gem is its plethora of vineyards. With perfect sunny slopes, fertile soil and the art of winemaking running in the blood of Villandroans, wineries are plentiful including some of the oldest winemakers in South Tyrol and newer wine-makers creating fresh, biodynamic natural wines. The tradition of Törggelen take place here too, where winemakers and farmers gather to enjoy the first batches of wine and market produce.
Naturally when in Villandro, you’re drawn to the mountains, in summer the hiking paths are edged with wildflowers and traditional mountains huts offer respite from the sun and usually a tasty bite or two. In winter, skiing is the pastime of many locals and visitors alike, on the tempting peaks of the Val di Funes, the Sasso Putia and in the near distance ski region Alpe di Siusi - Europe’s largest alpine plateau.
Austere beauty and chunky grandeur are the inaugural hallmarks of this 15th-century castle and glacial-grey monolith perched on the slopes of South Tyrolean village Villanders / Villandro in northern Italy.
