Nestled amid palm trees, figs, ferns and sunshine in the south of Italy's beautiful, distinct South Tyrol, lies the serious wine region of Kaltern am See, or Caldaro al Lago, close to Termeno. A hot spot for windsurfers, summer wild swimming and nature lovers, Lake Caldaro, Kalterer See - Lago di Caldaro is the largest lake in South Tyrol and lies in a lush valley basin, approx. 4 km from the village centre of Caldaro and Termeno.
Surrounded by gently rolling hills, perched on the edge of a magnificent, sparkling lake and bordered by acres upon acres of vineyards, Kaltern am See is an idyll indeed – a winemaker's (or wine lover's) paradise and an integral part of the famous Weinstraße. Gewürztraminer, perhaps the most famous of wines, is produced here.

The former fortress is the widely visible landmark of the area and a popular hiking destination with a stunning view on Lake Caldaro. Windsurfers flock here to ride the Ora, a southern wind breeze blowing around midday from Lake Garda through the Valle dell'Adige valley. However, its southern shores attract nature lovers and hikers: There's the largest preserved wetland area between the Po Plain and the Alpine divide, the Lake Caldaro Biotope. The 7.5 km long Nature Experience Trail shows you Lake Caldaro in all its beauty.
A groovy icon from the seventies, Seehotel Ambach, presides over the shores of Lake Caldaro in Italy’s South Tyrol with its perfectly formed, curvaceous marshmallowy walls of laid-back glamour and a canvas of tangerine, vert and oxide red, which drape mid-century furniture pieces.
