The Design Bothy

A great basecamp from which to explore the wilderness of the Spey Valley, Cairngorms and the Monadhliath Mountains.

Intro

Set within the Killiehuntly Farmhouse & Cottages estate, the Bothy and Geordie's Cottage are a fabulous self-catering holiday option surrounded by the wilderness and solitude of the Cairngorms National Park.

Following a lengthy conservation process, Killiehuntly Bothy and Cottage were stripped back to their bare architectural bones, features that now form the design canvas of these Nordic styled holiday houses.

Decorated with warm hues inspired by the Highlands and Scandi-Scot interiors, the Bothy and Geordie's Cottage at Killiehuntly are a perfect Scottish refuge of style for those seeking a retreat close to nature, furnished for the modern nomads.

Rooms

At the centre of the Killiehuntly courtyard is our little bothy. Best suited for a family, the bothy has a double room and a twin bunk-bed room, as well as cosy wee sitting room and a fully equipped kitchen.

Adjoining the bothy is a closed herb garden, and a wonderful place to sit and watch the sunset over the mountains beyond. The bothy is a wonderfully simple space to base yourself as you explore the Highlands. After a day in the mountains, it is a comforting little haven to relax and recoup.

Sleeping up to five, Geordie’s cottage is a cosy self-catered home for a family or group of pals. It is made up of one double room, one single room, and one twin room. The heart of the home is a living room with a log burning stove, casual seating and an old dining table. Through this room, you have the use of a fully equipped kitchen stocked with a few essentials to get you started. Geordie’s cottage is a wonderful basecamp for wild adventures. It overlooks the Cairngorm National Park towards Kingussie and sits at the heart of an extensive conservation area punctuated by ancient forests, rolling mountains and secluded lochs. It is a house with nature at its heart. Children are of course very welcome.

Location

Set within the remote western pocket of the vast Cairngorms National Park, close to the Highland village of Kingussie in Badenoch, Inverness-shire.

Killiehuntly Cottages are on the grounds of the famous Killiehuntly Farmhouse, about a 45-min drive from Inverness, south of Aviemore. A great basecamp from which to explore the wilderness of the Spey Valley, Cairngorms and the Monadhliath Mountains.

Owner

Killiehuntly Farmhouse Hotel is owned by a conservationists-at-heart Danish family who have a strong passion for Scotland and a deep-rooted love of unspoiled nature. "The interior design we coin Scandi-Scot", Anne Storm Pedersen explains, "is a mix of modern art, contemporary Nordic furniture and design items combined with true Scottish craftsmanship".

"Our formula is quintessentially simple, to share our passion to protect and preserve nature, encouraging people to experience this beautiful remoteness, while being able to stay in a beautifully crafted interior and enjoy hearty homemade food".

"Scottish and as local as can be" is how Anne describes her hosts at Killiehuntly, "all of our team have a close affinity to the estate, from the rangers who follow in the footsteps of their ancestors, to the in-house hosts and cook - they know this landscape like the back of their hands".
