Laion

Italy

Perched above the Eisack Valley, Laion reveals the Dolomites with composure and clarity. Known as Lajen in German and Laion in Italian, this quietly assured village sits at the hinge between valley culture and high Alpine terrain, where meadows tilt gently towards the dramatic rise of Val Gardena, Gröden. It is a place shaped by agriculture, faith and altitude, where daily life still follows the rhythm of the land and the seasons.

Laion’s position is one of South Tyrol’s most discreet advantages. The village looks towards the Dolomiten, with swift access to Ortisei, St. Ulrich, Urtijëi and the high plateaus beyond, while remaining anchored in the calm practicality of the Eisacktal, Valle Isarco.

Laion’s origins lie in early Alpine settlement and ecclesiastical life, with documented references stretching back to the Middle Ages. The village developed through scattered hamlets and farmsteads rather than dense urban form, resulting in an architectural landscape of pitched roofs, timber barns and stone houses set against open pasture. Nearby, Burg Trostburg is a Castel that rises above the valley as one of South Tyrol’s most significant medieval fortresses, long associated with Oswald von Wolkenstein and the region’s literary and noble history.

Sacred architecture anchors Laion’s identity. The Church of Our Lady, (Chiesa di Santa Maria), stands at the village heart with Gothic origins and later Baroque layers, while St Peter’s Church crowns the hamlet of San Pietro with its recognisable onion dome and wide valley views. These buildings are less monuments than markers of continuity, still woven into everyday village life.

Laion is ideally placed for year-round access to the Dolomites. Hiking routes lead directly from the village towards Val Gardena, including the historic Poststeig, Sentiero della Posta, a gentle link between Laion and Ortisei. Higher up, trails open onto the Resciesa, Raschötzplateau, where panoramic paths unfold beneath the Odle, Geisler, Fermeda peaks.

Winter brings swift access to the Val Gardena, Gröden ski area and Alpe di Siusi, Seiser Alm, both part of the Dolomiti Superski network. Skiing, snowshoeing and winter walking are all within reach, while Laion itself remains a composed retreat above the busier resorts. Mountain biking, alpine pasture walks and guided hikes shape the warmer months, always framed by open views and long light.

Laion offers the Dolomites at close range, without theatrics. It suits travellers drawn to landscape, architecture and Alpine culture, who value perspective as much as proximity.
