The Windsor puts the glamour of the Italian Riviera into the fore, with a classic reinvention of a seaside hotel that captures the nostalgic days of travel’s Golden Age. Catching the movement of sunshine ochre as its passes through, The Windsor beautifully references the subtle art of summer days through exquisitely placed design objects that have been chosen with absolute precision.

Located in the under-radar coastal hamlet of Laigueglia in Liguria, northwest Italy, it’s hard to believe that the buzzing glitz of France’s Cote D’Azur is under an hour away; by contrast this peaceful village with its slow-paced pleasures, pastel-hued houses, small shops run for generations and presiding church of San Matteo feels like the real deal.

Shuttered windows in olive green and wrought iron balconies frame the geometric structure of The Windsor standing proud yet humbly encased in its surroundings, decked in pale yellow. Holding a commanding position over the seafront, The Windsor opens out onto its own private beach.

Inside, style prevails in abundance in a modern rethink that balances its authentic façade with a contemporary look - wide open spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, abstract art, designer touches and commissioned furniture. Despite its vantage point on the seafront, the building had been left to dilapidate for over 15 years, which was how owner and passionate restorer Alessandro Sironi found it. With creative director and wife Alice Muzzioli, and architect Simone Subitoni of Studio Blesi Subitoni, based in Piacenza, they together embarked on a grand renovation, using the locale as their inspiration. High quality material, locally sourced, deck the interiors from swathes of marble-effect stone, carved walnut wood in geometric patterns to flashes of brass detail. The overall interior colour language feels rooted in Italian shades of seaside glamour from muted gold, flecks of ocean blue and sunshine yellows creating a subdued canvas of chic simplicity which makes way for the full impact of Italian design icons and modern classics.

Dotting the interior and exterior, spot the designer flourishes: lighting by Davide Groppi, the clean lines of Kettal sunbeds and modular sofas by Living Divani. Those with an eye for the icons will note the mid-century Ico Parisi PA 1947 Table by Cassina and the 699 Superleggera Chair by Gio Ponti that has been in production since 1957. Using only Italian design brands heightens the feel of a modernisation rooted in Italian culture, pushing on the original hotel template which resides firmly in the Golden Age of travel. Art plays its part too at The Windsor and this is where the interior design plays with colour and form. Ceramic vases created in the Sicilian style are sculpted by artists by Enrica Vulcno and Maurizio Orrico who riff on the original concept, allowing the personified pots to be brightly hued with modern day motifs.

Highly attuned to modern design concepts yet perfectly placed in the authentic traditions of fishing village Laigueglia, the Italian Riviera has an icon for the next generation.

As you might expect from a seaside hotel of this splendour, there are a selection of rooms to meet the needs of the style-seekers coming to the Italian Riviera. With twenty-five rooms you can choose between sea view, superior, deluxe or suite and whether you face the sea or the hamlet, each encapsulates the freeing feeling of being by the sea with an emphasis on light, breezy interiors.

The top floor Junior Suite is rather special, with its double balcony that affords epic sea views from Alassio to Gallinara and on to Capo Mele. The room is not without its designer touches including a desk by Ico Parisi. The Wellness Suite is the one to pick to get into the relaxation zone with its sink-into-me bathtub and dual views including to the jetty and onto Alassio.

When staying by the coast, it’s imperative to have a taste of the sea. You won’t be disappointed at The Windsor: peppering the menus are gems from the ocean including scallops, swordfish, snapper, squid and lobster, brought together in glorious confections. The restaurant Savo also ensures that every table has a sea view, and here you can indulge in a fine-dining five course tasting menu matched with wines, created by chef Gian Luigi Erme.

At other times of the day, incorporate stops at the bar as part of your leisurely stay at the Windsor. In between the restaurant and the beach, pop here for morning cappuccino, a range of international cocktails come lunchtime and classic Italian favourites to slide you easily into aperitivo hour.

Peaceful seaside village Laigueglia in Liguria, northwest Italy is the home of The Windsor, a small, low-key village typified by the glinting sea, pastel-hued houses, traditional way of life and church of San Matteo.

The beach is of course a big lure to those coming to the area, with its fine sand and calm waters. The hotel has its own ‘Bagni Windsor’ beach club making a day on the sand a more stylish affair. Walking into the village is also a leisurely activity, strolling past bakeries, artisan shops and further on to explore the overflowing greenery of Villa della Pergola and the ‘lovers' wall’ embedded with love notes. Behind the village is a mountainous hinterland ideal for hiking adventures – stop at the medieval village of Colla Micheri for refreshments and Cervo to climb up to the vantage points afforded by the castle of Clasevana.

Passionate restorer Alessandro Sironi with creative director, interior designer and wife Alice Muzzioli are the owners of The Windsor and it won’t be a surprise to learn that this is not their first hotel venture. Aficionados member Filario on Lake Como is created by Sironi and reflects his love of aesthetics and the traditions of Italy. Sironi himself grew up in Lake Como and for him, Filario needed to connect to the heritage of Como. Like many creatives, Sironi travelled around the world, working within hospitality in Miami and the UK, before he realised his home turf held so much untapped potential. Similarly, The Windsor taps into the great seaside traditions of the Golden Age of travel with its gorgeously vintage demeanour whilst being a thoroughly charming place to while away a holiday.
