Straddling the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, Valeggio sul Mincio is a pretty communethat brims with history, authentic locavore delights and a wonderfully picturesque park. And all just a stone’s throw from the serene shores of Lake Garda and its emerald waters.
This under-the-radar hotspot of authenticity and heritage has plenty to lure the curious traveller, being easily accessible from Verona, Lake Garda or our gorgeous farm-hotel place up the road. Surrounded by the glacier moraines and a blanket of green verdancy lush with vineyards, Valeggio sul Mincio is demarcated by the gushing Mincio river and sights that date the region to the Bronze and Iron Age.
The charming mill village of Borghetto sul Mincio, known as ‘Italy’s prettiest village’ is a wonderful settlement to explore by bicycle, with a track that leads onto Peschiera-del-Garda, Lake Garda’s most southerly town. Borghetto is adorably cute, with quaint houses and old mills lining the river’s edge. The Visconti Bridge is more imposing, a 14th-century fortified viaduct. Borghetto sul Mincio is also the home of tortellini which you can enjoy in authentic taverns with a glass of local wine. After lunch wander to the Parco della Sigurtà in Valeggio, - a vast landscaped garden blooming with roses and tulips with a maze, woods, sweeping lawns and ornamental ponds.
Speaking of wine, the area is rich with productive vineyards creating delicious rosé’s, full-bodied reds and bubbly sparkling wines. Many of these vineyards have been here for generations and welcome a visit to tour the vines, explore the cellars and taste their appellations.
And of course, the lure of Lake Garda is never far away, close enough to explore for a morning from Valeggio sul Mincio including gorgeous lakeside Lazise with its sublime beaches and excellent dining. And in just over half an hour you can be in Verona’s historic heart – surrounded by dusky-pink medieval houses and cobbled streets and speckled with Roman sites.
