Torri del Benaco

Italy

On the eastern shore of Lake Garda, Torri del Benaco captures everything that makes this region irresistible. A medieval castle, a picturesque harbour, citrus groves perfuming the air, and a waterfront promenade perfect for evening strolls. Life moves at an unhurried pace, steeped in history, natural beauty, and a love for the good things.

The most striking landmark is the Castello Scaligero, its imposing walls standing watch over the lake since 1383. Commissioned by Antonio della Scala, a ruler of the Scaliger family, the fortress was built to protect the town’s port and shipyard, once a thriving trade hub. Today, its well-preserved towers house a museum dedicated to the region’s deep-rooted traditions of fishing, olive oil production, and winemaking.

Beyond its defensive past, the castle is home to a rare citrus greenhouse, the limonaia, where oversized lemons thrive in the area’s mild microclimate. The tradition of cultivating citrus trees along Lake Garda dates back to the 14th century when Franciscan monks recognised the unique potential of this Alpine-meets-Mediterranean environment.

The lakeside promenade is an essential part of life in any town on Lake Garda, and Torri del Benaco’s is one of the most scenic. Cypress trees and historic facades frame the walkway, where the lake stretches into the distance, best enjoyed with an ice cream in hand.

The clock tower, Torre dell’Orologio, stands as a reminder of centuries past, while the Oratory of the Holy Trinity, a 13th-century church, holds delicate frescoes that have withstood time. The harbour, lined with brightly coloured fishing boats, remains a focal point of the town, once bustling with traders and fishermen. Today, it is the perfect setting for an afternoon espresso or an evening aperitivo with a glass of Bardolino wine as the sun sets over the lake.

Torri del Benaco is more than a destination; it is a starting point for exploring the lake’s treasures. From here, ferries cross the water to Riva del Garda, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, and Arco, a haven for climbers. To the south, the vineyards of Bardolino await, as well as Sirmione, where thermal waters and Roman ruins create a unique blend of history and relaxation.

This is a town where history, culture, and lakeside life come together, offering a glimpse into the timeless charm of Lake Garda.
