'Always travel in style' is a mantra we adhere to at The Aficionados, which is why quintessentially British heritage brand Connolly is our go-to for handmade leather pieces, luxury knits, beautifully made wardrobe staples and the habitual traveller's essentials: carry-on bags, all decked out in Connolly's stylish functionality. It is a perfect pitstop for those who live in the fast lane of travel, design and adventure.
Established in 1878, this bespoke British brand has distinctive form and is a converted maker by the legends of luxury-crafted brands. It has evolved through the eras to stand today as a timeless classic that gives nostalgia and eccentricity a modern nod. Housed in a gorgeous period Georgian townhouse, Connolly is characterised by its monochromatic shop front in the upper echelons of Mayfair. Inside, a deliberate pared-back interior created by Gilles & Boissier, the Paris-based architects and designers, is an easy-on-the-eye experience with subtle details reaffirming the brand's love of original crafts.
Hark back 140 years and see a different but no less relevant company emerge. A small family business, Connolly was known as saddlers and shoe smiths, but as automobiles began to take off, Connolly slipped nicely into bed with the car industry, producing high-quality, beautifully finished leather for car interiors, aligning themselves seamlessly with the golden age of classic cars and racing.
Building on their principles of high-quality British craft, Connolly became established and sought after, supplying the leather interiors for the pinnacle of iconic car brands such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Aston Martin. Adding a layer of collectability to classic cars, today, Connolly leather can be specified in new Ferraris and found in special editions such as the 'new' limited Jaguar E-Type.
Connolly's exquisite, superior leather has also been used in conjunction with titans of Britain's design and heritage institutions, including seating aboard Concorde, the reclining Eames chair, within the desks of the British Library, and even swathing the interior of the King's coronation coach and is seen the world over on those famous red and green leather seating within the House of Lords and Commons in Parliament.
With this wealth of heritage endorsement behind Connolly, it was natural that an evolution into contemporary living followed a path underpinned by high-quality style, honest craft and British tradition. Presenting as a lifestyle and clothing brand of modern classics, with a designer-led leather collection, classic collection for men and women plus a driving collection, Scottish cashmere and a tight edit of accessory pieces, Connolly leads the way with restrained style – much like the modern British gentleman.
And for those gentlemen and women who like to travel, Connolly has you covered. Fluid lines and simple detailing are the hallmarks of Connolly's Sea Bag, made from butter-soft French nubuck or fine-grain leather; it's the perfect size for a weekend getaway. Pair this with a cosy 100% merino wool 'travel sweater', a simple yet intricately spun yarn pullover ideal for layering and keeping breathability in differing worldly climes.
We also love the Chunky Art Cardigan made from wool and cashmere and the printed lightweight wool and silk scarfs, the perfect combo for aeroplane chills. Another home and travel essential is the Connolly Candle, infused with notes of cedarwood, sandalwood, birch, tree moss, and, of course, leather. It is an ideal aroma to accompany you on your journey.
Whatever tickles your style fancy, a piece by Connolly will escort you for countless years and, just like the brand's beginning, is something to be handed down through the family.
