All plying their trade among Nyhavn’s colourful houses and gently bobbing wooden boats, the scene has changed very little since Christian V’s day.
A must-see destination in the very centre of Copenhagen, Nyhavn progresses from it’s colourful and classically Danish canal-side houses on the northern side to lavish mansions on the southern side, including the magnificent Charlottenborg Palace on the corner of King’s Square, another must-see piece of Copenhagen’s evocative past.
Today, Nyhavn is filled with trendy restaurants, the floating sounds of jazz music and the chatter of locals, all of whom flock there on balmy summers days to enjoy the sea breeze, relaxed atmosphere and picturesque setting.
Once home to one of Copenhagen, and indeed Denmark’s, most prolific creatives, Nyhavn housed Hans Christian Andersen – writer of The Little Mermaid - at number 18 for nineteen years. In place of Andersen’s old home now stands a souvenir shop, but for something more permanent (although you can’t take it home…), there is always Edvard Erikson’s famous little mermaid statue, a short 20-minute walk away on the edge of Langelinie.

New - Papirøen, or Paper Island (next to the Opera) is the newest culture-art space, a must see visit in the harbour of Copenhagen, Denmark. Copenhagen Contemporary have taken over the space, expect artistic installations, street food and creative hubs.
