One of the least admirable aspects of fashion is the way it perpetuates a desire to own more: new styles, different cuts, ever-changing colour requirements and that’s before we come to the seasons and collections. This is achieved by offering a coat that is akin to a ‘kit’, where it can be constructed and deconstructed, reversed or added to, made warmer or cooler plus with accessories on hand to cater for your every whim (and whatever the weather may throw at you). 

The result is a coat that will see you though every eventuality, and is certainly a garment for life, especially given the attention drawn to Italian materials, family-run factories and skilled artistry, and the personalised service from the get-go to ensure you are happy with your finished product. Build your own jacket using building blocks such as ‘parka’, ‘rain jacket’ ‘bomber’ or ‘quilt’ then layer with inner vests, introduce colourways with reversible outers or patchworks, then have fun with shearling or corduroy collars, knitted hoods, rain capes and even matching bags.

The creative brain behind this outfit is Georgia Dant, who founded Marfa Stance in 2019. Previously working in design for fashion houses like Burberry and Rag & Bone, Georgia wanted the freedom to explore some of her own ideas, and influenced by Burberry’s utilitarian aesthetic, her thoughts focused on a functional product that could harness creativity whilst still being long-lasting.

Her methods of designing with purpose lead Georgia to fuse style and function in one clear vision – the coat.

This seedling was the starting point and with her growing multigenerational company, she likes to be very involved in each process. For example, you may well bump into her at a trunk show or pop-up – for Georgia, seeing how the customers interact with her designs inspires her. She’s also an inspirational figure herself, building a sustainable business that also gives back by supporting a plethora of women’s and environmental charities. Georgia’s favourite Marfa Stance piece? A signature quilt, paired with an aviator collar – style indeed.
