Copenhagen’s Fashionista Cecilie Bahnsen

It used to be the case that it was difficult to get noticed as a fashion designer when one was not based in a fashion capital like Paris, New York, Milan, or London. These days, the Internet – and social media in particular – has facilitated the sharing of imagery and information from wherever on the globe one lives and works, democratizing many aspects of life.

In the case of Cecilie Bahnsen, a Danish designer who shows at Copenhagen Fashion Week, it’s been a mixture of a growing social media following (clocking off at 11.8k at the moment) and intent interest from, amongst others, Vogue, that propelled her to her current status of most coveted Danish designer.

Even before having shown her third season, Bahnsen was picked up by the cult store Dover Street Market. Her luxury label, Cecilie Bahnsen, is based in Copenhagen and draws on a rich culture of design, combining couture craftsmanship with sculptural silhouettes.

Fusing tailoring with feminine flourishes, Bahnsen’s pieces are handmade with traditional techniques. She uses standout fabrics and employs intricate details, without veering into the overly precious, instead remaining firmly modern through interesting layering and proportions.

A surefire Dover Street Market fit.

Though Bahnsen honed her skill at the highly respected Royal College of Art in London, she decided to keep a firm base in Copenhagen – no doubt for the same reasons of finding that quiet creative headspace that we’ve reported also keeps Henrik Vibskov in the Danish capital.

And Copenhagen is firmly supportive of Bahnsen, too. With no less than three retailers carrying her line (Lot 29, Mads Nørgaard and Birger Christensen) you’re never too far away from Bahnsen’s sophisticated modernity.
