Schotten & Hansen – In the Business of Wooden Flooring

Schotten & Hansen began in 1984 in Bavaria at the hands of Danish carpenter and restorer Torben Hansen. Since then, the brand has become a global authority in regenerable wooden flooring and surfaces, rooted in traditional craftsmanship and driven by a spirit of innovation.

Renowned for its ultra-smooth floorboards and parquet floors, Schotten & Hansen also crafts wall and ceiling veneers, doors and micro-perforated acoustic elements – all with a meticulous attention to nature and sustainability. Each product is conceived to age gracefully and integrate seamlessly into its environment.

With this commitment to quality and longevity, Schotten & Hansen surfaces have been specified in the world’s most elevated interiors: private homes, boutique hotels, superyachts and members' clubs. Architects and designers such as Antonio Citterio, Ina Rinderknecht, Francisco Cortina, Norman Foster and Matteo Thun have all collaborated with the house.

Founder Torben Hansen remains at the helm, while his sons Maximilian and Ulrich now steer product development and UK operations. The brand continues to evolve, merging material authenticity with innovation, most recently demonstrated through Ridgeline, a new magnet-compatible wooden surface defined by a sculpted relief structure and richly textured appearance.

Inspired by the ridgelines of the Alps between Bavaria and Italy, Ridgeline captures the drama of natural topography in timber form. Its design references the deep tones of bog oak and the tactile quality of split wood, producing a sculptural, three-dimensional surface that plays with light and shadow. Compatible with magnetic or traditional installation systems, the veneer panels are ideal for walls and furniture fronts, offering exceptional flexibility across interiors.

Ridgeline was unveiled during Salone Del Mobile in Milan as part of two standout collaborations. At the fair, Schotten & Hansen and furniture maker Janua launched their first joint collection – a bold composition of architectural form and richly coloured wood, framed by Ridgeline surfaces. Simultaneously, in the Brera Design District, the brand partnered with London designer Bodo Sperlein to present Ridgeline at MENU – an immersive installation themed around the concept of the banquet as a celebration of materiality, craft and reinvention.

Back in the studio, the same philosophy continues. At the heart of the company’s output is a magnetic system that allows veneer panels to be reconfigured or reused, reflecting a strong commitment to circular design. Ridgeline joins a wider portfolio of natural wood surfaces developed from decades of research into colour, texture and transformation.

“The combination of traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology gives us the means to realise complex interior projects, all over the world,” says CEO Bernhard Heinloth. “Our customers delight in refined products and natural finishes. This motivates everyone at Schotten & Hansen to give their best every day.”

Much like those who plant trees not for themselves but for the future, Schotten & Hansen continues to build something enduring – a forest of design thinking, rooted in nature and shaped for what’s next.

Torben Hansen, founder of Schotten & Hansen, says: "We are incredibly proud to unveil Ridgeline, our new flexible magnetic-compatible surface. At Schotten & Hansen our driving force is the pursuit of excellence in crafting high-quality wooden surfaces that merge natural beauty with innovation. With Ridgeline, we take wood into the third dimension”
